Why Your Guitar Recording Is Out of Sync (and How to Fix It)

You put on Bluetooth headphones, start a click, record a quick guitar pass, and everything feels fine while you play. Then you listen back and the take sounds late. Not wildly wrong, just enough that the groove feels off-beat and you start wondering whether your timing is worse than you thought.
Most of the time, your playing is not the problem. The problem is the monitoring path. Bluetooth headphones can make what you hear arrive about 150-250ms later than the real moment your hand hits the strings, while the phone microphone records the actual performance in real time.
That gap is big enough to make a guitar recording feel out of sync on playback. You performed against what you heard, but the file captured what happened in the room.

What "out of sync" usually means
When musicians say a phone recording is out of sync, they usually mean one of three things:
- The playback sounds behind the metronome. If the guitar lands after the click even though it felt locked while playing, monitoring latency is a strong suspect.
- It felt right in the moment, but the audio file sounds wrong on its own. That can happen when your ears were reacting to delayed monitoring instead of the real-time performance.
- It only happens with Bluetooth headphones. If the same setup sounds normal through the phone speaker, you have almost certainly found the cause.
The third signal is the fastest one. If the timing is off only when Bluetooth headphones are involved, do not blame your hands first. Check the listening path.
Why Bluetooth headphones delay your recording
Bluetooth audio is built for convenient listening. To stay stable, the phone compresses the outgoing audio, sends it wirelessly, and the headphones keep a small buffer before playing it. That buffer is useful for music playback, but it is awkward when you are trying to play exactly with a click.

How to check if latency is the problem
Try this quick test before changing your whole setup:
- Open a metronome on your phone and set it to 60 BPM.
- Put on Bluetooth headphones and record eight beats. Strum one chord or mute the strings and play a clear percussive hit on each click.
- Listen back through the headphones and notice whether the guitar feels late.
- Now play the same recording through the phone speaker.
If the speaker playback feels aligned, the performance is probably fine and the Bluetooth monitoring path is the issue. If the speaker playback is also off-beat, then look elsewhere: your metronome level may have bled into the mic, the room may be noisy, or the take may simply need another pass.
The fix, layer by layer
Use wired headphones or the phone speaker. This is the simplest fix. There is almost no monitoring delay, so it is the safest option when the recording has to be precise or when you plan to send the file to someone else.
Use latency compensation in recording software. If you record on a computer, many apps can compensate for interface or buffer delay. That works well when the whole setup is designed around recording: audio interface, wired monitoring, and a clear input route.
Use an app that compensates for Bluetooth latency. This is the practical layer for everyday practice: you want headphones, you want a quick take, and you do not want to build a studio session just to hear whether yesterday's riff improved.
For daily practice, the third option is usually the least annoying. For exporting something important, the first option is still the most conservative.
